DeerNow In Action

Macie's Blacktail

As many dedicated blacktail hunters know, trying to get a mature buck to consistently hit supplemental feed can be difficult. Once the blacktails in this part of Oregon's Willamette Valley, east of Eugene, were introduced to DeerNow's Blacktail feed, things began to change, fast.

On the first night DeerNow was set out, does and yearlings hit it. Soon the competition became great, and does began hitting it in the daylight. To reduce competition at the supplemental food source location, handfuls were placed in small piles, a few yards apart from one another. This attracted even more blacktail does.

Within a few days, this blacktail buck discovered DeerNow. Multiple times he hit the piles at night, devouring them until gone. Then he started hitting the special blacktail formula in the daylight hours, before the does could get to it.

When stalking in to hunt the area one evening, 15 year old Macie Stewart and her dad, Chris, saw the buck bedded in some brush, within a couple hundred yards of where it had been hitting the blacktail attractant. Macie got set and made a perfect shot.

This mature blacktail is a testimony that these deer will come to supplements, and confirms that three years of tedious work to get DeerNow's Blacktail Attractant to where it is, today, paid off. Congratulations Macie, on a great buck!

DeerNow Usage Information and Tips

We’ve been getting lots of interest in DeerNow, the specialized blacktail attractant we worked on for three years prior to introducing it about this time last year. With another year behind us, and interest growing, here are some suggestions and reminders when using DeerNow. We hope this helps, and please let us hear how it goes for you, good, bad or otherwise.

• With a break in the weather coming, now is the perfect time to introduce DeerNow. Deer that have tasted DeerNow will hit it no matter how wet it gets, but deer being introduced to it for the first time seem to have higher hit rates when done so, dry. This is because the high protein pellet, which is a unique blend found only in DeerNow, can swell when it gets wet. Once deer develop a craving for it, we’re finding they eat it no matter how wet it gets.

• Place DeerNow in small piles (one handful is what we suggest), 5 steps apart, so deer can spread out and eat it. This cuts down on competition among deer, and ensures multiple deer get a boost in nutrition.

• DeerNow can be broadcast from a feeder, but we suggest mixing it with a food source such as wet cob or corn.

• DeerNow is a highly nutritious attractant (not a food source), so if looking to keep deer in an area, supplement DeerNow with apples, wet cob or corn. After eating the DeerNow, the deer will move to the feeds.

• Many people have attested to the fact DeerNow has helped deer in their area start eating additional feeds they never hit before. Deer often start on DeerNow, get interested in eating more, and that’s where lower cost feeds like wet cob, corn, alfalfa and other sources come in.

• In multiple areas of the Cascade foothills, valley floors and Coast Range, blacktails started hitting DeerNow where they would touch nothing but apples.

• When DeerNow is placed alongside other attractants and feeds, which we do regularly to test what blacktails prefer year-round, we find they hit DeerNow, first, over 90% of the time. Almost always, they devour all the DeerNow before moving on to supplemental food sources.

• Does DeerNow work everywhere, all the time? Of course not, it’s just like hunting where there are never any guarantees, especially when it comes to the Columbia blacktail, what we feel is the most challenging big game animal to consistently attain season after season.

• In areas where bucks have been hitting DeerNow for four years, we’re seeing increased antler growth and mass, and doe and fawn numbers are obviously increasing.

• Baiting for deer is legal in Oregon and Washington.

• We’ve had some reports from the Washington coast, up to the Peninsula, that DeerNow has not worked all the time. Keep in mind most of those reports came from last November, when the attractant was introduced, wet.

•We’ve had some reports in the foothills of the Cascades, that where blacktail deer have been hitting other foods and attractants for years, DeerNow is not the first choice of deer coming to multiple baits.

• We’ve had many reports that DeerNow works best in areas where blacktails are picky, where other attractants and food sources have failed.

• People who have been using DeerNow since July and August, report the same bucks hanging in the area right now, mid-October. They also report an increasing number of bucks, does and fawns continuing to show up.

• Will elk eat DeerNow? We hope not. This is one of the things we worked on, as we did not want elk eating this expensive, high-protein blend. We’ve found very few elk even look at it in the Cascades and lower elevation foothills, while on the coast a small percentage of elk that pass by will eat it. We’re also finding once deer taste it, they’ll beat the other deer and elk to it.

• One of the main purposes of DeerNow is to create a sense of craving among blacktail deer, so the competition to get to it before other deer do, rises. This means big bucks coming to it in daylight hours.

• Will DeerNow work for you? We hope so, that’s why we developed it. But just like we’ve learned in our years of testing, sometimes an attractant works, sometimes in doesn’t. In three regions we tested it, we never had a single blacktail consistently eat one of more than a dozen different attractants and feeds we tried, and these were attractants and feeds that worked well for us in other part of the blacktail’s range. Now, after tasting DeerNow, the deer eat it and supplemental feeds.

• This is my 40th year of hunting blacktail deer, and I’ve been fortunate to take record book bucks in all three states, and the family has taken many other great eating blacktails. Over the years I’ve experimented a great deal with feed and attractants, and have found nothing works better than DeerNow in the areas I hunt.
